Chapter Eight

Don’t Touch My Stuff—Wealth

“You weren’t born to pay bills and die.”

—ANONYMOUS

The year was 1888. Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist, had made his living inventing and producing dynamite. While he had grown extremely wealthy from this, he sat distraught on this particular day. His brother had just died in France. While that was grief enough, it was amplified by an unintended realization.

As he picked up the French newspaper to read his brother’s obituary, he instead found his own. It seems that the editor had confused the brothers and had written the following headline: “The Merchant of Death Is Dead.” His obituary told of a man (Alfred) who had become rich by helping people kill each other.

At that moment, shaken by what he read, Alfred resolved to use his wealth in a manner that would leave a different legacy. Eight years later, when he died, he had left more than nine million dollars to fund awards for people whose efforts worked to help mankind. We know the awards as the Nobel Prize.1

This man had the ability to do whatever he wanted with his wealth, and he determined to use it to leave a lasting legacy and to make a difference.
